The Museum and Public Center is devoted to the preservation of the memory of Andrey
Sakharov and all those who suffered and sacrificed under the totalitarian regime. Its
purpose is to educate those unfamiliar with past abuses and to promote the continued
development of intellectual freedom, respect for individuals and civil and social
responsibility in Russia.
The Museum's extensive “Totalitarian Past” exhibit includes photographs and maps of
forced labour camps (GULAGs), Stalin decrees, propaganda
literature and posters, underground literature and photographs and short biographies of
some of the people who were arrested, imprisoned and killed for their convictions. Other
permanent displays are “Conditions of Freedom — Russia's contemporary problems”
and “Andrey Sakharov — His life and Work”. In 1997 the Museum mounted several
changing exhibits “25 Years of Doctors Without Frontiers”, “Freedom Through Eyes of
Yuri Rost: photographic essays”, “Refugees in Moscow” etc. Changing exhibits provide
a forum for current problems or current social commentary.
The Museum Center educates Russian students about the totalitarian past through the
museum and lectures given by activists or individuals who experienced abuses of the past
regime. The Center also serves as a working museum, conducting its own seminars and
meetings or hosting Russian or foreign human rights organization's seminars, meetings and
press conferences.
The Museum Center is non-profit organization created and funded through donations.
