Formed in 1990, the society was practically the only human rights organization in the
Volga region. In 1993, the Society was registered under its current title. The Society
unites the members of various human rights organizations from Nizhny Novgorod Oblast.
Its areas of activity are
protection of the rights of
prisoners and the reformation of the penal and judicial system;
legal and analytical work in human
rights;
protection of conscripts, including
the granting of alternative military service;
legal aid to citizens.
The Society's representatives visit colonies after receiving complaints from prisoners,
give legal advice and provide charity to penal institutions in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast. The
Society since 1993 has published a journal, Pravozashchita (Human Rights Protection),
which is distributed among human rights organizations and population of Nizhny Novgorod.
Since 1994, the Society has been carrying out the «Small Library» programme, which has
been supplying prisons, and especially colony libraries
with books (more than 5,000 books to date).
Since 1992, the Society has been cooperating closely with the MCPR and has helped to daft and implement projects and
programmes for the Centre.
